Tooth Discolouration

Tooth discolouration can be superficial changes that affect the enamel surface, or can be deeper staining which affects the entire tooth structure. It is essential for the dentist to identify the type of discolouration in the patient?s tooth, diagnose the cause and define the appropriate treatment plan. Tooth discoloration in vital teeth can result from aging, tobacco use, chromogenic foods, medications and pulpal pathology.

Types of Discolouration

Side Effects

Tooth whitening is generally safe, the only issue that may arise from tooth whitening is tolerability of high dose procedures. Mild and transient tooth sensitivity and local oral irritation represent the principal adverse effects of high dose whitening. Tooth sensitivity occurs more often with poor patient compliance with at-home whitening systems and particularly when using higher concentrations of bleaching agents Lower dose technologies have been introduced in home-use products, including a paint-on liquid gels and whitening strips with hydrogen peroxide). In clinical studies, both the paint-on gel and whitening strips have been shown to be safe and effective. As a general warning to clients we encourage them to be cautious and avoid using products of high concentration (22% or 36% Hydrogen Peroxide unless recommended by your dentist) and to avoid using products from unknown sources or manufacturers as these products may cause irreversible damage to teeth and gums. If in doubt always ask your dentist or visit our dental clinics for professional consultation, only buy kits of high concentration to replace your existing ones or as top up of products prescribed by your dentist.

Whitening Strips

A new method involves using a hydrogen peroxide-impregnated polyethylene strip (Crest Whitestrips) for 30 minutes twice daily. This method is recommended for maintaining already whitened teeth. It can also be a good option to patients who cannot afford the cost of other whitening treatment or who do not have the time for multiple dental visits for tray fabrication. It is also a good method for eliminating mild discolorations and tetracycline stained teeth. The use of this flexible, polyethylene whitening strips allows for consistent bleaching using shorter contact times. Fixing the daily strip regimen at 30 minutes per day. Using strips proved in many clinical trials to be safe and effective. Even though results varies according to age, type of staining and compliance with usage instructions. The products have been scientifically proven to lighten tooth colour especially discolouration resulting from food, drinks, smoking and aging. In almost all tooth chemical bleaching systems, Hydrogen peroxide is the active ingredient to remove discolouration. Dentists use high concentrations of Hydrogen or Carbamide peroxide to achieve immediate tooth whitening. However these products may result in increased sensitivity and require extensive patient care. Tooth whiting strips like other professional and home tooth hydrogen peroxide based bleaching systems only whiten natural teeth. They do not bleach dental work such us bridges, veneers etc. Use strips twice daily on your upper and lower teeth. You will notice improvement in your tooth colour in less than a week. To achieve maximum results please follow each product instructions.
